Grades vs. GPA - UGA Undergraduate Admissions Grades vs. GPA In the wake of Early Action decisions going out, we generally have a number of questions about why a decision was made, and a great deal of confusion surrounds the concept of GPA. Most of the disappointed comments and email I am seeing have a GPA listed in them, and usually they do not match what I have as a GPA. As such, here are a few examples of why UGA looks at the grades on a transcript (and recalculates a GPA), and not on the GPA listed on a transcript. In case you have not guessed, I have written about this in the past, but this is an updated version of previous posts. While writing this post, I have selected three files from the EA applicant pool that all have the same UGA GPA of a 3.32. Why did I select this GPA? Because it was the first random GPA to pop into my head. I then reviewed the transcript for each file and looked at the GPA listed on the top of each transcript. The first applicant has a GPA listed on their transcript as a 3.44 transcript GPA, the second has a 4.01 transcript GPA, while last one has a 4.45 transcript GPA. As you can see, what a high school has as a GPA may vary greatly from what UGA has calculated (that last one has a difference of 1.13!). Why is this, you may ask (yes, I know you are asking it right now). As I have said several times before, UGA is looking at your actual posted grades in your academic classes, whether it is semester or block or trimester, and then calculates an admissions GPA based upon these course grades. In other words, UGA Admissions does not look at the GPA listed on your high school transcript! You can take a Sharpie pen and mark through it for all that I care, because we do not use it! And the reason why? Because most school districts in the country determine their own method of calculating a GPA, adding weight here or there, using X classes or Y classes, etc. I have even seen an Honors PE course before where the weighted grade was added into the transcript GPA. I am fine with that, as every school district has the right to calculate a GPA however they want, but please do not confuse what we list as a GPA for our purposes as what you would see on your transcript. In the UGA Admissions Office, we try to look at all the grades in an equal method, whether you apply from Arizona or Athens, GA. We look at your academic core grades to understand how many As, Bs, Cs, etc. you have earned, and then go about determining a GPA (for more details on how we calculate an admissions GPA, see an earlier post I wrote about calculating GPAs at UGA. We give out our mid-range GPA so that people will have a general baseline for where applicants fall within a certain understood range, but the reality is that you need to have a common method of calculating GPAs (as UGA does) in order to get a true understanding of the situation. So when you submit a comment like I have a 3.32 GPA, , I have no real understanding what that GPA is. My suggestion? Start looking at your grades within the A/B/C/D/F categories, and try and understand if you are a mostly A/a few B student, a mostly B with a few Cs student, and so on. Go ahead and figure out what your UGA GPA would approximately be. Because the next time I hear someone say My son is a 4.0+ student, and when I reply stating that they must have all As, I hope that I do not see a look of confusion. Remember, it is grades that we look at on a transcript, not a GPA posted on the top corner! Go Dawgs!

Some glaucoma medications can lead to blocked tear ducts as well.à How They Get Blocked Blocked tear ducts can result from a number of conditions. Some babies are born with tear duct abnormalities, most of which resolve themselves as they get older.à An injury to the eye or nose can disrupt the tear ducts function, and even something as small as dust stuck in the tear duct can cause problems. In rare cases, blocked tear ducts are caused by a tumor. Tear duct blockage also can be a side effect of chemotherapy treatments for cancer.à Unblocking Tear Ductsà To unblock your tear ducts at home, youll need some warm water and a clean washcloth or tea towel.à Pinch and rub your nose underneath the bridge.Place a warm, wet cloth over your eyes for 10 minutes.Repeat every 4 to 6 hours, if needed. If this treatment does not work and you are still having problems, it is a good idea to consult a medical professional. There are other ways to treat more serious cases of blocked tear ducts. Sometimes antibiotic drops or ointment may be sufficient, but if the problem persists, it may be necessary to irrigate the lacrimal sac, which can be done as an outpatient procedure in a doctors office. In cases where the blockage is severe and does not respond to other treatments, a surgery called dacryocystorhinostomy may be required to create a new tear drain between your nose and your eyes.

Why Bad Eggs Float Fresh eggs sink because the egg yolk, egg white, and gases have enough mass that the density of the egg is greater than the density of water. Density is the mass per unit of volume. Basically, a fresh egg is heavier than water. When an egg starts to go off decomposition occurs. Decomposition gives off gases. As more of the egg decomposes, more of its mass is converted to gases. A gas bubble forms inside the egg so an older egg floats on its end. However, eggs are porous, so some of the gas escapes through the eggshell and is lost to the atmosphere. Although gases are light, they do have mass and affect the density of the egg. When enough gas is lost, the density of the egg is less than that of water and the egg floats. Its a common misconception that rotten eggs float because they contain more gas. If the inside of an egg rotted and the gas couldnt escape, the mass of the egg would be unchanged. No doubt, technology has made our life luxurious , comfortable and exceptionally fast but all this is at the expense of our humanity.Being a leader, one could lead himself and others to achieve the goals and outcomes that we or our collective group have set. This may include interfac ing with technology, but behind that we are still very much human beings. In a technological age, we are under threat of losing our humanity, and at the same time advancing it more powerfully that ever before. Transactional leadership, the definition of the outcome and the management of it, serves a purpose, and is reasonably easy to learn. The people you lead may do what you say, as the dictator dictates, yet how can you find a way to really genuinely inspire them to perform at a level far beyond the normal levels? Transformational leadership offers that possibility. As a transformational leader, we are called to be the highest expression of humanity at this time, and so lead ourselves and others towards a new destiny that awaits us. A way of being that inspires our most noble selves, to be of service, as an act of self mastery. To consider and hold ourselves and others in a way that is empowering, uplifting and inspiring. To engage each person we interact with, with honour and res pect. To be this and all the other ways of being that a transformational leader is, is a commitment to something far greater than just ourselves. It is more that just basic survival, acceptance and group recognition. It is the expression of our individual potential, or self actualisation. In some ways it is a calling, and requires an investment in you and in others, with no promise of a return, and a willingness to trust that there is something in humanity that has the potential to respond with in a positive, upward overall trend the potential for each of us to lift each other into a new level of understanding, relationships and consciousness. Like evolution, it is a journey of uncertainty. Never knowing where exactly we will end up, yet a willingness to be present for what is happening now, and making powerful choices about our future from there. Housman was a poet born in 1859 who became very successful during his lifetime. ââ¬Å"To an Athlete Dying Youngâ⬠represents the theme of glory is fleeting by illustrating the point that if a successful athlete dies young, they will not have to worry about their glory of victory fading. They can rest in peace knowing they will be remembered at their athletic peak when they were successful and victorious.They will not have to go through the pain of watching their fame disappear or whither out with time. In this poetic masterpiece, Housman pulls together figurative language, sound devices, and structure to illustrate that glory is fleeting through a majestic poem that will be remembered for many years. Figurative language consists of many different devices including metaphors and similes which are often used in poetry like ââ¬Å"To an Athlete Dying Young. â⬠Metaphors compare unli ke things but does not use like or as, the comparison is implied.Some metaphors that stick out in ââ¬Å"To an Athlete Dying Youngâ⬠are the phrase ââ¬Å"stiller townâ⬠which is a metaphor for a cemetery and the line ââ¬Å"Eyes the shady night has shutâ⬠which metaphorically states that someone has died. Another device often used in Housmanââ¬â¢s poem is similes, which compare unlike things while using like or as to make a direct comparison. Some examples like ââ¬Å"It withers quicker than the roseâ⬠use than instead of the like or as which is commonly used for similes. Most, if not all, similes in this poem use this method.When contradictory terms are used consecutively they are called an oxymoron. The only line in this poem sticks out as an oxymoron is ââ¬Å"silence sounds. â⬠Poems are usually known for rhyming, but not all do. Many poems use other sound devices such as alliteration and rhyme. ââ¬Å"To an Athlete Dying Youngâ⬠uses both of th ese devices throughout the poem. Alliteration is the similarity of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or consecutive words. One example of alliteration is ââ¬Å"The fleet foot on the ill of shadeâ⬠because of both fleet and foot and sill and shade. Another example is ââ¬Å"Today, the road all runners comeâ⬠because of road and runner. Rhyme is similarity of sound between words or the endings of words when used at the end of a line of poetry. The rhyme scheme of ââ¬Å"To an Athlete Dying Youngâ⬠is ABAB. This means that the last word of every two lines rhymes. For example, ââ¬Å"So set, before its echoes fade,/The fleet foot on the sill of shade,/And hold to the lintel up/The still-defended challenge cup. This is an excellent demonstration of the ABAB rhyme scheme because ââ¬Å"fadeâ⬠and ââ¬Å"shadeâ⬠rhymes, as does ââ¬Å"upâ⬠and ââ¬Å"cup. â⬠In ââ¬Å"To an Athlete Dying Young,â⬠Housman uses iambic tetrameter, w hich refers to a line that is four iambic feet long, to create a lyric poem that can otherwise be known as an elegy since it praises an athlete that died young. Iambic tetrameter affects the beat of the words and how they flow together gracefully. Iambic tetrameter consists of a stressed syllable followed by an unstressed syllable. Most lines in these poems tend to have eight syllables.However, lines thirteen and fourteen, ââ¬Å"Eyes the shady night has shut/Cannot see the record cut,â⬠stray from iambic tetrameter to trochaic tetrameter, one stressed syllable plus one unstressed syllable in four feet, with catalexis, which is an incomplete foot at the end of a line. The literary masterpiece, ââ¬Å"To an Athlete Dying Young,â⬠uses figurative language, sound devices, and structure to illustrate a poem that demonstrates the fact that glory is fleeting. The figurative language is used to create imagery, or to provide visual descriptions to create images in oneââ¬â¢s hea d.Figurative language paints a picture with words to help readers see the story. It also creates many different perspectives based on the readers and their perspectives. The sound devices help create lines and rhythms that gracefully flow off the readerââ¬â¢s tongue. Structure is what incorporates the rhythms and other devices into a pattern that binds the lines of a poem into a small story with a moral that can be told to many different generations. ââ¬Å"To an Athlete Dying Youngâ⬠is a magnificent example of a lyric or an elegy that will be told for years to come.

Channel Firing Poem Analysis Essay - 1497 Words
Thomas Hardys ââ¬Å"Channel Firingâ⬠is a poem written in 1914, four months prior to the start of World War 1. This historical context is crucial to understanding the poem as it expresses the dark and sorrowful foreshadowing of the months before the war, creating feelings of tension, turmoil and unrest. There were, at the time, many young men who did not share the common unease, more so tension turned to excitement, turmoil to eagerness and unrest to anticipation. The split between society in the months leading up to the war is portrayed in Hardys poem. For example, the anonymous character Hardy embodies in this poem states how he ââ¬Å"thought it was judgement dayâ⬠as he hears gunfire, quite clearly depicting his fear and others around him as heâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This interpretation could be seen to blame the church, as does the aforementioned point made stating how men fight and die in the name of God, making a direct relation between religion and death. In the third stanza, I believe Hardy uses an interesting and peculiar image of a drooling glebe cow. This image, in my opinion, could either show how this creature is unaffected by the turmoil of war, perhaps showing how mankinds wars have little impact on the rest of the world. It could also be a criticism towards the church. Throughout Hardys other poetry he questions either the motivations or the very existence of God, therefore we could assume that the image given through the quote, ââ¬Å"the glebe cow drooledâ⬠could indeed be critical towards the Church or God. However, clearly in this instance Hardy is not necessarily doubting Gods existence as he introduces him as a character. He explains to the risen dead that it is not ââ¬Å"Judgement Dayâ⬠, merely the beginning of another war, comparing it to the wars in which they died, describing it as ââ¬Å"the world as it used to beâ⬠. This description brands humanity as a race born to fight, nothing more. Thomas Jefferson plagiarized multiple ideas from John Locke. John Locke was an English philosopher that wrote the Second Treatise of Government. Locke wrote the Second Treatise of Government for similar reasons that Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence. Locke believed that God made all people naturally subject to a monarch. Locke wanted all people to equal. Although this was a popular opinion around, Jefferson decided to take almost word from word from the Second Treatise of Government. Jeffersons words only differed from Lockes because he thought owning property was not the only thing that could make people happy. Jefferson was accused by Richard Henry Lee that he plagiarized Lockes Second Treatise of Government. Jefferson considered the part that he copied from Lockes document to be the best part of the Declaration of Independence. He said that The object of the Declaration of Independence was not to find out new principles neither aiming at originality of principle or sentiment. Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence to be an expression of the American mind. Although Jefferson did say he wanted to take opinions and thoughts from all around, he never gave credit to the people that he took the ideas from. It is clearly shown that these words were Lockes and not Jeffersons because Lockes Second Treatise of Government was written in 1690, 86 years prior . The Declaration of Independence states that we have unalienable rights. These rights were also stolen from an Enlightenment philosopher named Francis Hutcheson. Francis Hutchesons idea of rights to our life challenge the ideas of Locke. Hutcheson is the one who says that our rights are natural, unalienable, and inherent to our being as humans. In 1755, Hutcheson wrote the System of Moral Philosophy. Hutcheson challenged Lockes idea about how Locke thought of our rights in the wrong way . Jefferson took information away from this argument and included it in the Declaration of Independence. This is, again, another reason why Jefferson changed life, liberty, and property, to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. Although Jefferson obviously agreed with Lockes ideas, Hutcheson challenging his ideas encouraged Jefferson to change the word property to the word happiness . Thomas Jefferson plagiarized from George Mason in multiple ways. George Mason wrote the Virginia Declaration of Rights. This was later published in the Pennsylvania Gazette, on June 12, 1776 which was days before Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson stole some of Masons main ideas and phrases. There is said to be a direct influence from Masons work. Mason wrote that All men are born equally free and independent, and have certain inherent natural rights. Jefferson writes similar words saying that everyone has unalienable rights and that all men are created equal. He says, We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These are almost the exact same ideas. This is perfect evidence that Thomas Jefferson plagiarized the Declaration of Independence from Masons ideas and exact words. Thomas Jefferson has also been accused of stealing ideas from the Articles of Confederation. Jefferson wanted a government with a loose federalist idea which was very close to the idea of the Articles of Confederation. Jeffersons limitations on federal power was based on the states and individual rights. People were concerned that Jefferson was focusing more on states rights more than individual persons rights. When Jefferson was questioned on this part of the Declaration of Independence he would track it back to the Articles of Confederation and it is said that he was inspired from this document because it had points that should have been covered . This would not have been plagiarism if Jefferson had just given credit to the main authors of the documents. This is proof that Jefferson stole ideas from different documents. One year before Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence, people from the county of Mecklenburg had written a Declaration of Independence for themselves. Jefferson read the document and happened to think that this document was bogus and that was illegitimate; yet there seems to be very similar ideas that are in the Declaration of Independence. The Mecklenburg Declaration declares themselves free and independent people . Another similarity between the two is the idea of God given rights . Again, this is almost the exact same idea as Jeffersons Declaration of Independence and although there are no direct quotes from this document there are many similarities between the two documents. Thomas Jefferson again has stolen ideas from another important document. Jefferson copies many ideas from the Magna Carta to write the Declaration of Independence. He easily took from this document because both documents were written to give justice to citizens by focusing more on their rights and freeing people from unfair rule . The Declaration of Independence says, He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States, and for imposing taxes on us without our consent. Although Jefferson did not copy the exact words from the Magna Carta, the main idea is there and made it easier for him to write the Declaration of Independence. Thomas Jefferson defended himself when philosophers accused him of plagiarizing from their journals and works. He says that his intention was not to steal from their work. He intended to take ideas from the American mind and include it into the Declaration of Independence . Jefferson wanted the people to agree with the terms that are included, so he took from other popular works so that the Declaration of Independence was not just his opinion. These examples show that Thomas Jefferson plagiarized the Declaration of Independence. The argument whether Thomas Jefferson plagiarized the Declaration of Independence or whether he came up with all of its ideas on his own is still going on and on today. Although there are many examples to prove that Jefferson has stolen or copied from other peoples works it is also clear that it was not his intention. What he thought were good ideas and would help the democracy grow, he put into the Declaration of Independence . Thomas Jeffersons idea to take from other peoples works was somewhat selfish but at the same time incredibly smart. The people wanted equality and they wanted to be listened to and heard, so Jefferson took from the peoples works so their ideas would be in the Declaration of Independence. All Jefferson had to do was to give the true authors credit and the Declaration of Independence would not be plagiarized. One can clearly tell that although Thomas Jefferson plagiarized from other peoples works, he did it for the wellbeing of the United States of America.
